The Marine Hybrid Simulator for Local College Students.

Innovating Marine Education: The 1st Marine Hybrid Simulator for Local College Students

At Akiva Ltd, we’re committed to providing educational solutions that empower students to become future innovators. Our newest project, the Marine Hybrid Simulator, is a custom training system designed specifically for college students. This advanced simulator aims to transform how students interact with complex subjects in hands-on, practical contexts. It covers power generation, energy storage, energy management, and consumption measurement in real-world learning environments.

Why Build a Simulator?

Victron equipment mounted on a white metal bench
The focus of colleges on "future technologies" within the marine industry—encompassing both commercial and leisure sectors—posed a distinct challenge for ours. We recognized the need for a system that was not only portable to meet landlord requirements but also adaptable enough to fit future relocation needs. Furthermore, it required a robust design capable of simulating the intricacies of modern hybridized electrical systems typically found aboard marine vessels.  The outcome is a modular, interactive system that closely replicates actual marine setups, constructed entirely with Victron Energy equipment. This selection underscores our commitment to reliability and high performance in the marine technology sector.

Key Features and Modules

Power Center Module

The heart of the simulator, the Power Center, showcases contemporary energy storage and conversion technologies. This module includes:

Victron Energy Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries

Victron Energy

24V 5000W inverter

Victron Energy

his module includes extensive Victron Energy remote control and monitoring capabilities, allowing students to practice advanced energy management. It offers a comprehensive view into the generation, storage, and use of power on modern marine vessels. These insights are essential for understanding off-grid power solutions in real-world applications.

Alternator Module

This innovative module replaces traditional diesel engines with a 3-phase electric motor powered by a Variable Frequency Drive. The drive is connected to a standard 230V power supply. Students can observe in real-time how alternators charge batteries. This hands-on experience builds a deeper understanding of energy conversion and efficiency in hybrid systems.

Generator Module

This module highlights the efficiency of DC generators in recharging batteries under various conditions. Key features comprise:

4.8kW DC generator

Portability achieved through a convenient trailer-mounted design.

Realistic systems for cooling, fuel, and exhaust that replicate actual generator operational environments.

These features replicate actual generator operational environments for more effective training. Students gain insights into real-world applications of generators in hybrid systems, promoting sustainable energy practices.

4. Solar Module

This portable arrangement incorporates two 210W solar panels mounted on an adjustable "A" frame, allowing students to experiment with various panel angles and sun positions. This hands-on experience provides vital knowledge on integrating solar energy into hybrid systems while underscoring the significance of clean energy initiatives.

Hands-On Learning Opportunities

The Marine Hybrid Simulator is not merely an assembly of equipment; it offers comprehensive training sessions that enhance the educational experience:

Initial Training

Personalized sessions designed for both students and employer demonstrations, promoting collaboration between academia and the industry.

This experiential learning approach equips students with the skills necessary to navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of future marine technologies.

Transforming Marine Education

In essence, the Marine Hybrid Simulator serves as a conduit for the next generation of marine industry professionals. By faithfully reproducing authentic scenarios, it endows students with critical skills and expertise, preparing them for flourishing careers in energy management, hybrid systems, and sustainable marine technologies.

At Akiva Ltd, we take pride in collaborating with local colleges to advance their mission of fostering innovation and excellence in education. The Marine Hybrid Simulator exemplifies our dedication to delivering forward-thinking solutions that inspire and educate.
